Trade School
Career Information
Working toward
a college degree is certainly a good way to go in todays challenging
job market, but another option is looking into one of the many trade
schools available today. Learning a trade gives you a good opportunity
to get into the job market and make a good living more quickly.
Opportunities are plentiful today in the many trade skill areas
including: automotive technician, building construction, plumbing/heating,
refrigeration/air conditioning, motel/hotel management, and the
allied health fields, among the many high-demand trades. This is
one way to get into the job market quickly. Most of these schools
offer hands-on training, job placement assistance, help with the
appropriate certification, and claim to do so in little more than
a year--a lot less than four years of college. So when looking for
a new career opportunity, consider the skilled trades.
In the South
Florida Business Journal, Jane Hastings, program coordinator for
Palm Beach Community College's four trade and technical campuses
that host about 19,000 students, stated, "A college degree's
a wonderful thing, but many of our students can make a really nice
living in the trades." Nelson Perez, who directs the Miami-Dade
School District's four technical education centers, said, "Skilled
trade areas are in very high demand." Whereas community colleges
require GED or high school degrees, most technical schools do not.
Those who select a trade school should also focus on some basic
educational skills such as English as well as basic math and reading,
all of which lead to greater success and satisfaction in life. Most
employers look for some of these basic educational skills. To read
